First Year Friday: Breastfeeding Challenges: Teething

As I wind down the breastfeeding series, I will be spending the majority of posts looking at breastfeeding challenges

Several readers recently asked me about teething. I realize this can be a huge breastfeeding challenge for some.

I will be honest. It hasn't been a challenge for me. (And it's not because of anything I've done!) Both of my daughter have been late teethers. My first didn't cut her first tooth until 11 months.

And my second--who will be 10 months next week--just started cutting her first tooth!

Now, since I went on to breastfeed my first for 22 months, I did nurse many, many months while she had a full set of teeth.

Did she ever bite me? Absolutely.

What did I do?

Honestly, I just didn't make a big deal out of it.

I said "No," and slid my finger in between myself and her mouth to break the latch, and I then said: "No bite" and let her re-latch.

My second daughter's tooth isn't to the point where she can actually bite me...yet. Things might be different with her! So far, she is just a little clingier and wants to nurse more.

I let her.

How did you deal with teething and nursing? Did your child try to bite you? Was teething the beginning of the end for you? I'd love your feedback! (I may need your advice in a few weeks if Baby Girl starts to bite!)
